Karen Kost, Amanda Hu, Timothy Brown, Mike Allegretto, Jon Young, Kevin Fung

Abstract

Introduction

The mainstay of therapy of Recurrent respiratory papillomas (RRP) is surgical. Complications with repeated procedures may result in complications and a decreased quality of life.

Objectives

  1. reviewing current management of RRP
  2. understanding the limitations and potentially morbid complications of surgical treatment
  3. examining the controversies and possible role of the vaccine, cidofovir and bevacizumab

Methods

The goals of surgery are to establish a secure airway, minimize damage to normal structures, preserve voice and minimize the risk of complications.

In this workshop, alternative therapies such as the vaccine, cidofivir, and bevacizumab will be explored in the context of the available literature, and current ‘expert opinion’. Important points will be highlighted through case presentations. Audience participation will be encouraged, and solicited.

Results and conclusions

Emerging alternative therapies in RRP are worth considering in selected cases. Treatment must be individualized to the needs of the patient
