“See One, Do One, Teach One: How Can We Improve Perioperative Technical Skills Education and Acquisition?” Sunita Rai, Paolo Campisi, Eric Monteiro, Yvonne Chan, Lily Nguyen, Josie Xu

Abstract

Objectives:

  • To review current landscape of technical skills education in Canadian Otolaryngology residency programs and barriers to improvement
  • To introduce concrete teaching/learning strategies for perioperative residency education

Methods:

  1. Introductory lecture:
    • Describe the “Educational Timeout” checklist tool development process including baseline survey of OR educational climate
    • Describe the application of academic learning theories in Otolaryngology
    • Describe new models of education (Competence by Design, role-playing simulation, surgical simulators)
  2. Small-group breakout session (mix academic/community/resident surgeons)
    • Share positive, negative educational experiences with prompting questions
  3. Large group discussion
    • Highlight of common themes, success stories and anticipated barriers to curricular improvement

Results/Conclusions: By the end of this workshop, participants will understand how learning theories apply to otolaryngology surgical education and gain peer insight on ways to improve practices at their own centre. More directed educational interventions (such as the Educational Timeout) can be incorporated into everyday OR culture.
